The Layout Philosophy
For many years full batten mains have been the norm for cruising boats and offshore racing boats and this continues to be true. The full length battens add overall durability to the sail by reducing flogging, and contribute to supporting the mainsail fabric. Having all the battens full length unnecessarily increases the weight of the sail and removes some of the shape controlling ability through the lower portion. With full battens down low, the ability to change the camber of the sail in that area is impaired by the stiffness of the battens, and they also inhibit the reefing process. Longer than normal battens are used through the reef area and are adequate to support the roach down low.

In the past the IMS rating system penalized boats with full length battens in their mains, therefore it's been rare to see a top IMS racing boat with a full battened mainsail. PHRF however, does not penalize for full battens and the majority of Doyle's PHRF racing mains are 2+2 Mainsails. They are extremely high performance and durable with the short lower battens being light and allowing for easy changes in sail shape.

Do the Full Battens Have Trouble Going Up and Down the Mast?

With older sails and slide systems, people shied away from full length battens because they would catch as the sail went up and down the luff track. With modern slides and sail systems, this problem has been eliminated. Custom Doyle "Slip Slides" engineered out of Nylatron, are self lubricating and much stronger than conventional slides. They are economical and stop the battens from hanging up.
