J/44 Class Chooses Doyle Sailmakers Long Island to Supply 15 New Class Mainsails

J.44 Class Chooses Doyle Sailmakers Long Island to Supply 15 New Class Mainsails

After an exhaustive evaluation process the J/44 Class has chosen Doyle Sailmakers Long Island as their supplier for 15 new class mainsails.

In 2007, the class began looking into replacing their Dacron mainsails.  They were looking for exceptionally strong, durable sails that would provide better performance than the Dacron sails they had been using.  Not to our surprise, they found that woven Dacron sails could not hold a performance shape for these powerful 45' sloops.  After evaluating the design, materials, construction techniques and follow up service from all the top sailmakers they concluded that FiberLay Technora/ Kevlar sails best met their needs.  This is a big feather in our cap here and we thank the J/44 Class for their business and confidence

This sizable investment speaks to the strength of the J/44 Class, which was established in the early 90's.  The J/44 was designed by Rod Johnstone (who I'll be sailing with at the PalmaVela Regatta in April) and introduced in 1989.  In that year she won The New York Yacht Club Queen's Cup and Cowes Week on the way to becoming Sailing World's Overall Boat-of-the-Year.  In 1994 the 44 was the first one-design class ever to be given a start in the Newport to Bermuda Race.  It is not unheard of for them to get 11 boats on the line of a major regatta.  The J/44 Class had 15 boats in the 2008 Newport to Bermuda Race! Watching these fast, powerful boats prowl around the starting area can really be quite a sight.

It's Time to Get Sailing!

Doyle Rigging, Canvas and Sailing

Doyle Long IslandOne of the things that we can do to make sailing faster and more fun for you without breaking your bank is to recut your sails to shape them better.  We recently brought on Steve Jackson, a 3 time America's Cup sailmaking veteran"We recut sails after every race," he tells me.  "We can do wonders with what most people have.  I'm telling you, there isn't a boat out there that we can't make faster".  It doesn't matter whether you're racing or cruising.  You always want to get there faster and everyone would like to have their sails last longer.  We have drop off locations all over Long Island and in Queens and Brooklyn.  If you leave your sail at one of these locations or drop your sail off at the loft on a Monday we promise to have it ready for you to use on Friday.

Doyle Long Island is Long Island's best equipped sail loft featuring a modern, 5,000 square foot sail loft conveniently located on Route 110 in Huntington Station, just south of the railroad station. We make regular service visits to NYC and the eastern end of Long Island. We offer quick, professional sail repair, canvas work, furlers, mainsail handling systems, running rigging and hardware for all size boats. If is has something to do with sailboat or sailing, we can help you out.

Apart from being an excellent grinder, our Service Manager Dean Johns has 15 years of experience to date. Dean can assess your sails with you on the spot and provide accurate repair quotes.
