Spike Boston Wins S2 7.9 Class Championship

The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club in Macatawa, Michigan hosted the S2 7.9 Meter 2009 Class Championship September 17-19. Determing the victor of the 23 boat fleet came down to the final race, with Spike Boston squeaking out a 1 point victory over the Padnos team aboard K2.

Brother Jeff and Doug Padnos, with Wally Cross, David Becker and Chris Balliet had dominated in the light shifty breeze, but in the final day of racing it came down to the 2 teams, Frequent Flyer and K2. In Race 5, K2 finished first, and Frequent Flyer finished 3rd. But the wind was dying, and Frequent Flyer needed another race. A 6th Race would allow Frequent Flyer to throw out their 15th place finish in Race 3.

The wind picked up just enough to allow the race committee to get off a 6th race. With a throw out race, K2 and Frequent Flyer were tied. Whichever boat finished ahead of the other would win the championship. The wind lightened and the race committee shortened the course to 3 legs. Frequent Flyer finished 4th and K2 finished 5th, good enough for Frequent Flyer to win the regatta by a 1 point margin, taking the Championship for the 11th consecutive year. Doyle sails also powered 3rd place finisher, Dr. Paul Latour. Congratulations to all competitors.
