P2 Wins 2009 Newport Bucket Regatta

P2 Wins 2009 Newport Bucket Regatta

The 7th Annual Newport Bucket Regatta was held July 17-19, 2009. The 125 foot Perini Navi P2, recently named the Sailing Yacht of the Year by the International Superyacht Society, was the Overall Winner of the 2009 Newport Bucket Regatta. P2 won Les Gazelles des Mers (Racing Division), while Summer Wind, a 100 foot Alden, won Les Grandes Dames des Mers (Cruising Division).

The owner of P2 (Perseus 2) first conceived of P2 back in the 2004 St. Barth’s Bucket, when racing his prior Perini Navi Superyacht Perseus and was passed by the 147-foot carbon-fiber Visione. The ball was set in motion to build a smaller, faster, and more modern boat that would land him on the podium. Perini Navi successfully fulfilled expectations, leading to P2 winning the 2009 Newport Bucket Regatta.

Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube finished 9th. On Tuesday, gusty conditions prevailed again during the two races. Mark Mendelblatt and Mark Strube suffered a broken headsay pennant but managed to hold it together and finish the day with a 5th and 11th, results good enough to move into 5th place after the first 2 days of racing. After the first 3 races, John Gimson and Ed Greig are in 10th place.

Gimson and Mendelblatt teams are both using Doyle LM9 Mains and J2-L Jibs. For more information on Doyle Star sails, go to doylesails.com/star.
