Doyle Sailmakers’ One Design Team sail testing a pair of J/70s on Western Long Island Sound in preparation for Key West Race Week 2013 and the winter racing circuit.
Doyle One Design has been in high gear testing sail designs for the J/70. To ensure that Doyle J/70 sails are ready for the upcoming winter circuit, Jud Smith and the Doyle J/70 team utilized 3D modeling to design sails to fit the J/70 rig virtually.
This round of sail testing included Jud Smith, Mark Ploch, Paul Beaudin and Greg Marie from Doyle Sailmakers as well as Peter Duncan, Tom Blackwell, Andy Gilia, Luke Lawrence and Larry Suter.
The team 2-boat tested Doyle designs to determine the best Doyle design, then 2-boat tested the top Doyle design against existing J/70 sails including North Radian. The result – sails that tested faster than the competition over a 2-day session from ligh=e t to planing conditions.
With nearly 250 J/70s already sold, this class has quickly become the hottest new one design. The J/70 features a 22-foot waterline, high aspect rig, all carbon mast and boom.
