Mari Cha III has completed 5000 miles in just over a month of cruising with her new Doyle Stratis ICE sails, and her Captain Christian Lay has given us his take on how the new additions are performing under pressure.
The yacht was fitted with a full wardrobe of high performance ICE sails, created at Doyle Sails New Zealand’s Auckland loft, and the 44-metre yacht has been putting her new sail inventory through its paces. With the light, durable sails, Mari Cha III has found no loss of stability in arduous elements, delivering better performance and longevity.
“One of the big things we have noticed is how much easier the sails are to use than our previous ones. They set really easily and hold their shape so well,” says Lay.
“All the little details that we customised for this boat have made sail handling and manoeuvres, such as reefing, so much easier. The boat is very clearly faster. The service leading up to, getting hold of and then commissioning the sails cannot be faulted.”
Doyle Sails New Zealand’s Matt Bridge says the company enjoyed the process of producing the high-performance sails for the yacht.
“This was the first set of Doyle sails for Mari Cha III and working on such a well-known yacht was a really satisfying experience for us,” says Bridge, superyacht sails coordinator, Doyle Sails New Zealand.
“There was also a nice synergy for us, given that Doyle Sails New Zealand’s own Mike ‘Moose’ Sanderson, sailed onboard Mari Cha III during her record-breaking TransAtlantic crossing in 1998,” says Bridge.
ICE is a new generation UHMWP sail fibre first applied to the marine industry by the Doyle Stratis team, and tests have shown an exceptionally high resistance to flex fatigue, with ICE retaining its initial shape longer than other sail membranes.
“Dealing with the mizzen staysails and big code sails is now really easy and we can get rid of the 900 square meter Code 0, in about 10 seconds, which allows us to sail the boat harder and more aggressively with a smaller crew,” says Lay.
“We have already done 5000 miles with them in a little over a month and had every configuration possible in winds up to 40 knots. There have been no issues with stretch, chafe or wear. We have pushed them downhill with boat speeds into the mid 20 knot region and then done big round ups in big breeze to get them down. The new batten system hasn’t broken one yet which is a big improvement for us.”
“In short I think it’s fair to say that we are pretty bloody happy with them and I am now thinking about which other sails we need to buy for the upcoming adventures. Oh – and for the first time – we have some decent sail bags that are strong enough, big enough, which have enough hand holds and look cool with the names on,” ends Lay.

Doyle Sailmakers is excited to announce that Alan McGlashan has joined Doyle as a Sales Consultant out of its headquarters in Salem, MA. In his new position Alan will be responsible for the growth of sales in the racing and grand-prix markets.

A New Zealand native, Alan brings more than 25 years of marine industry experience to Doyle along with a vast depth of sailing and racing knowledge. McGlashan first started sailing Optimists when he was five years old, and began his professional marine career on the floor of Brin Wilson boats in New Zealand as a boat builder. Before joining Doyle, McGlashan worked at Ockam Instruments selling grand-prix and cruising instruments and Ronstan International as the Northeast Sales Rep with the primary responsibility for growing the Ronstan range of “Big Boat” hardware. Additionally he brings a strong professional background that includes experience as a professional sailor as well as a project manager for various campaigns.
McGlashan is actively working with a number of IRC programs and several One Design classes including Farr 40, Melges 20 and Swan 42.

Ragamuffin 90 and Team Ragamuffin crew, recently took line honors and set a new course record in the 2013 Hong Kong to Vietnam race. Averaging approximately 15.2kts for the course, she beat the existing record of Skandia Wild Thing by four minutes. It should be noted that the start lines were different for the two yachts. This year the start was off the royal Hong Kong Yacht Club. This added approx. 17nm of upwind work to the course length. Ragamuffin 90 was also 3mtrs shorter!
A key member of the crew, Mark Fullerton, coordinates the sail programs for Team Ragamuffin. After a successful Transpac Race for Ragamuffin 100, taking line honors, Mark worked on a sail plan for the 90ft boat with David Witt, (skipper) and Richard Bouzaid, design coordinator for Doyle Sails. They developed an Asian focused inventory, where the 90 will do most of her sailing. This included going to a bigger square top mainsail, a new R2, R3, A2, AP Jib and genoa staysail. All were made from Doyle’s proprietary Stratis laminated sail material.
Mark coordinated the design and manufacturing of the sails from the Doyle Qingdao loft. The loft has now successfully completed the sails for the Ragamuffin 90 & 100. All sails have gone on and exceeded all expectations with the accuracy of fit, detail and performance. The crew contained a couple of Volvo 70 sailors and they were nothing but complimentary of the sails on the boat. Even some of the custom sail hardware, clew and reef rings, were manufactured in china. All were tested and checked by Mark before the sail was finished. It’s a testament to the high standard that Doyle Qingdao has reached over a short time that has removed much of the stigma of “made in China”. More custom hardware is in the works after people have seen the quality of these sails.
The race itself was an exciting trip. After beating out of Hong Kong Harbour, sheets were eased and the yacht proceeded with a full main, R2 and genoa staysail. Constantly averaging over 20knots boat speed with a top speed of 33 knots! The rest of the race saw much use of the new Stratis A2 and the Straits R2. There were no issues with the sails throughout the trip. Syd Fischer, who owns the team Ragamuffin yachts, was very happy with the sails and professional attitude of Doyle Sails. He has now commissioned Doyle Qingdao to work on upgrading the inventory for the Ragamuffin 100 for this year’s Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
The sail project was managed by Mark Fullerton, design with Richard Bouzaid and engineering. Production was overseen by John Hearne and our floor manager Todd Cunningham.

The St Barths Bucket is one of the highlights of the superyacht sailing regatta calendar and a fleet of nearly 40 spectacular superyachts are gearing up for four days of racing in the 2013 St Barths Bucket which runs from the 28 – 31 of March.
A spectacular fleet of Doyle powered yachts will be out in force at the Bucket. Look out for 30m Leopard 3 and 38m P2 in the les Gazelles class; 62m Athos, 43m Koo, 52m Prana, 45m Salperton IV and 29m Symmetry in les Mademoiselles; and 48m Andromeda La Dea, 38m Axia, 34m Blue Too, 56m Rosehearty, 56m Zenji and the largest yacht in fleet, the 88m Maltese Falcon, in the Grandes Dames des Mers.
Salperton IV and Athos are fresh from victory at the Loro Piana Caribbean Superyacht Regatta & Rendezvous 2013. Salperton was the overall winner, securing a win in Division A overall, Division A’s cruising division, and the Boat International Media Trophy. It really was Doyle’s regatta as our customers Bolero and Athos also tied for first place in Division B. With such recent wins under their belt and in very good racing form, both Athos and Salperton IV will be ones to watch in the Bucket.

Doyle Sailmakers, based in Salem, MA, has recently announced that it has been awarded the contract to supply the complete sail inventory for the upcoming 60m performance sloop under construction at Perini Navi. The inventory encompasses a staggering 10,200 square meters (110,275 square feet) of sail area including what will be the world’s two largest spinnakers. The yacht is scheduled for completion in early 2014 and will make her debut at the 2014 St. Barths Bucket.
The order reinforces Doyle’s commitment and expertise in engineering some of the largest projects in the Superyacht industry including the sails aboard Maltese Falcon and M5, two of the world’s largest and most sophisticated sailing yachts. Essential to the success of this program will be the contribution of Doyle CFD’s analysis which is being used to model all aspects of the sail shapes and loading, completely integrating data from the boat’s hull and rig in real sailing conditions. This will ensure that the sails as well as the associated hardware are all up to the task of propelling this yacht through the water.
After several months of discussions, the final inventory was decided on after reviewing a number of possible combinations with an eye on smooth sail crossovers for an aggressive racing schedule the boat has planned. For upwind sailing, the boat will have a 840 sqm mainsail which is complemented by a range of headsails – a reacher, a blade jib, a working jib, and then a Code 0 for light air conditions. The upwind inventory will be constructed of Doyle’s proprietary Stratis membranes which have proven themselves on many of the world’s most glamorous Superyachts. This technology will enable Doyle’s engineers and sailmakers in Salem to construct high performance sails with minimal weight.
Downwind is where the boat will really shine. “We looked at every material available for these spinnakers and realized that there wasn’t anything in existence that would deliver the performance we were looking for,” explains CEO Robbie Doyle. “We partnered with Dimension Polyant to develop a new high-performance Polyester spinnaker fabric that is reinforced with Dyneema for durability and burst strength.” The new cloth allows the sails to be light and soft like a traditional spinnaker yet has tensile strength on par with other, heavier options. The addition of Dyneema to the cloth will ensure that the sail resists tears, essential to success on the Superyacht racing circuit. The boat will have two spinnakers, one measuring in at 2448 sqm and the other at 2170 sqm. In addition, she will be equipped with a 643 sqm spinnaker staysail set with a top down furler.
“With this project we are fortunate to take everything we have learned in the last 30 years on both Superyachts and Grand-Prix race boats and put it all together in one package,” comments Doyle. “We are extremely excited to be working with the project management team at Perini Navi, Future Fibers and Ron Holland Design to see this through its completion.” The order caps a string of good news for Doyle Sailmakers in the Superyacht arena, highlighted by the recent debut of the 50m Sloop Ohana, new inventories for the 52m Prana, 45m Artemis, and the launch of the 40m Perini Navi Sloop State of Grace with a full Doyle inventory. When the 60m performance sloop launches next year, it will be spectacular to see her perform.
It’s no surprise to us that Alex Thomson is managing to stay on the tail of the leading three boats in the 2012 Vendee Globe despite sailing a boat that’s been around for half a decade; after all, at least one of our prognosticators picked him to win the thing outright. Is he just that fast, or does he have another secret?
We grabbed Doyle Sails New Zealand boss Chris McMaster just before the start of the race to explain why Alex is the only sailor in the fleet not sailing with North or Incidences sails. Chris has plenty to say about their development program, and it’s a good look at one of the one of the most important decisions a round-the-world racer makes.
With the J/70 named the 2013 Boat of the Year over 300 J/70s sold, fleets springing up all over the country and with almost 40 J/70s signed up for Key West Race Week, Doyle Sailmakers is excited to be making fast, easy to tune J/70 sails.
During the second week of December, Jud Smith and Greg Marie from Doyle One Design went to Miami, Florida for a 2 day tuning session. This tuning session was designed to check over some of the slight tweaks made to the designs and to develop a tuning guide to ensure the maximum boat speed from Doyle J/70 sails.
The latest on our J/70 designs:
- Added a radial clew to the main for a lighter stronger clew.
- Kept the cross-cut midsection for smooth transition at batten ends.
- Testing has made it increasingly clear that the best VMG in light to moderate air will be achieved by sailing deep running angles.
- Our spinnaker design has been optimized for deep soaking angles while still being able to reach when planing.
Having a few other testing partners around in Miami gave us the opportunity to test rig tune and trimming methods.
