Developing the All Around Main

The focus of our mainsail development began with evaluating the existing "state of the art" accepted products and deciding what we could do different. Much of the existing sail development occurred before the crew weight limits where imposed and as a result the mains are quite full and difficult to depower. Certainly, not everyone sails their boat up to max crew weight at the fleet and district level, and we knew there was a need for flatter designs that are easier to depower.

The challenge of any all around Star Main design is to have enough power in the 6-9 knot range and yet not be too full and shut down in the real light stuff or closed in the lower leech in the fresher conditions. With each of our prototype main designs 1 thru 5, we developed entirely using our latest design software so we could easily update and alter the 3 dimensional design on the computer as needed for repeatability and accuracy. With a few recent tweaks to the computer molded main 5 design, luff curve and panel layout, we have begun to see the results of what we set out to accomplish perform on the race course.
