Racing Experience

While Doyle's team relies on a very advanced set of tools when designing sails, the design team still relies on the practical experience of a dedicated team of sailmakers and sailors. The people listed below represents a sampling of the resources that Doyle has at its disposal. Contact your local Doyle loft to find out how one of our experienced Sailor/Sailmakers can help you.

Robbie Doyle
A veteran of the 1977 America’s Cup on Courageous, Robbie Doyle has remained competing at the highest level ever since.  His understanding of elliptical loading in sails resulted in one of the largest changes in sailmaking and was instrumental in the early success of Doyle Sailmakers, which he continued on with ushering in modern CFD analysis on sail design, integrating all aspects of the hull, rig and sails.  Recent accomplishments include winning the 2012 Newport-Bermuda Race, 2013 Key West Race Week, and the 2012 Superyacht Cup in Cowes aboard the 206’ Schooner Athos.

Richard Bouzaid
Richard has been involved with America's Cup, Volvo 60, Vendee Globe and Grand Prix campaigns as well as most One Design classes. As head designer at Doyle NZ and Doyle International, Richard's wealth of experience offers significant advantages for Doyle customers. As one of the world's leading sail designers, Richard's technical knowledge and his experience with winning designs extends through both the local keelboat and international racing arenas.
Richard also has thousands of miles of offshore cruising experience under his belt so he is equally equipped to be able to help all sailors.

Jud Smith
Jud was born and raised in Marblehead, MA and learned to sail with his father, David Smith. He was the 2006 Rolex Yachtman of the Year and is the 2006 Etchells World's Champion, a former IOD World Champion, a two-time Mumm 30 World Champion, and the 2006 Rhodes 19 National Champion. Jud is also the 2010 Sonar North American Champion, as well as the 2008 Etchells North American Champion, the sixth time he has won the Etchells North Americans. He has won numerous other championships in other one-design classes. Jud was the mainsail trimmer on Stars and Stripes during Dennis Conner's 1995 America's Cup campaign. Smith has been a sailmaker for over 30 years and is regarded as one of the finest One-Design sailmakers in the world.

Mike Sanderson
The name Mike Sanderson will be familiar to anyone with an interest in yacht racing. Mike is a two time Volvo Ocean Race winner, veteran of three America's Cup campaigns and was ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year in 2006. He also has extensive superyacht experience including taking the transatlantic monohull record on Mari Cha IV.
Mike brings with him to Doyle a wealth of experience having been involved in the technical side of sail programs and as part of the design and build teams of both team ABN AMBRO boats as well as skippering ABN AMBRO ONE to one of the most convincing victories in the race's history.

Tac Boston
Tac Boston, a Doyle Boston veteran and world champion, is a third generation sailmaker who brings an impressive level of experience in all forms of sailing from dinghies to Maxi's. From 1992 to 1998 Tac served as production manager at Doyle Boston. In 1998, Tac joined the RX Sight Maxi Racing Team as on-board Sailmaker. The RX Sight was a Swedish Maxi that sailed in every major race in the world. Tac has raced in France, Italy, Spain and across North America. In 2001 Tac became a world champion in the Sonar class, sailing with Mark Ploch.
