While still in high school in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Lindsay Smith started her sail making career, pounding snaps, cutting numbers, and sweeping floors at the Doyle Curtis loft in Marblehead. Fast forward 15 years, and Lindsay Smith is now the Loft Manager of Doyle Sailmakers Partners in Salem, MA. Lindsay works closely with her father, the iconic sailing legend Jud Smith, under the ownership of Robbie Doyle and his son, Ethan Doyle.
Doyle Sails Salem is a full production loft, catering to local cruisers and racers, with a well-equipped service department. It is also the primary hub for Doyle Sails One Design in North America, with particular success in the J-70, Star, and Etchells fleets. Top teams worldwide are powered by One Design sails designed and manufactured at this facility.
Lindsay and her sister grew up sailing Optimists before moving into several One Design classes and PHRF programs in Marblehead and Newport. During summers between her studies at Smith College, Lindsay taught sailing at the Boston Yacht Club. Lindsay has enjoyed a decade of membership at the Eastern Yacht Club. The Eastern hosted the J70 Worlds in 2018, where her father seized an impressive victory, and has historically hosted many premier international events in the most competitive One Design classes. Lindsay has been part of teams winning Sonar North Americans, Rhodes 19 Nationals, Town Class Nationals, and PHRF New Englands.
Lindsay remains heavily involved in the local racing scene and is also the Certificate Processor for PHRF of New England. Her current role as pit person on a modified Tripp 41 keeps her busy for a weeknight, weekend, and overnight races during the Marblehead racing season. Lindsay will be trimming spinnaker as part of an all-female Etchells crew for the Etchells Nationals on the 17th of June 2021 – keep an eye out for the “Fast Mermaid” and their pink spinnaker next month.
DOYLE ONE DESIGN // Winning sailors know that when boats are identical, sails become a significant opportunity to gain a performance advantage. ABOUT DOYLE SAILS // As sailors, our obsession with sailing connects us to the water. The water is our playground, a sanctuary where we seek enjoyment, a competitive playing field where we race as comrades; it’s sometimes our home and always a place that unlocks our sense of adventure wherever that adventure might take us.
Our obsession with sailing takes us to every corner of the world and onboard every yacht. We become part of teams, share in the adventures of friends and families, sharing our knowledge and experience with those who have the same passion for sailing as we do. Sailing is in our DNA, where the water unlocks our sense of adventure. We are the custodians of a legacy that has been supporting sailors for close to four decades, and while our world changes around us, our commitment to sailors who seek the same enjoyment and adventure as we do hasn’t.
From our sailors to yours. We are your experts in sailing. Your adventure starts with Doyle. By sailors, for sailors.
