Doyle Sails is thrilled to see that Jud Smith has been nominated for 2018 US Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Most impressively, Jud came out on top at the J70 World Championship in his hometown of Marblehead, MA. This regatta was extremely rich in talent among the 91 competing boats, including three of the previous four J70 World Champions, Olympians, Volvo Ocean Racers, and National Champions. The battle for the podium was tough with results sometimes changing drastically each day, black flags presenting an obstacle most starts, and a wide variety of conditions including a rainy Nor’easter race day.
In training for the Worlds Jud’s J70, Africa, also won the overall title at the Marblehead NOOD regatta, winning the J70 New Englands, placing 2nd at the Bacardi Cup Invitational in Miami, and placing 2nd at the Newport Regatta.
Jud was the tactician on J111, Rowdy, who won their class at the Verve Cup Offshore Regatta in Chicago.
Two weeks after wrapping up the J70 Worlds and the day after one of his daughters was married at the Eastern Yacht Club, Jud headed off to Australia for the Brisbane Etchells Worlds. He placed 2nd of the Grand Masters and 8th overall out of 94 boats. Not quite his 2006 Worlds win, but pretty impressive for only training in one event prior to the 2018 Etchells Worlds.
We wish our head of One Design all the luck as the panel decides who amongst the impressive finalists will be named 2018’s Rolex Yachtsman and Yachtswoman of the Year and honored at St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco.
