Amanda Gaub’s sailing journey began in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by sailboats and adventurous trips on board various yachts from an Islander 24, a Newport 27, and a Tripp 32. Some of Gaub’s early experiences were defined by exciting weekend trips and day passages, often braving the rough weather of the Pacific Northwest that made each voyage a memorable challenge.
During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Amanda’s sailing journey took a significant turn when she relocated to San Diego, embracing the opportunity to dive deeper into the world of competitive sailing, she began racing with her father, Tim Gaub, onboard his J27.
Amanda regularly races in San Diego, participating in numerous local events both inshore and offshore. One highlight of her racing experience is aboard the Spin Doctor, a high-performance, all-carbon fiber Andrews 40 Custom, where she sails with the inshore race team. She is also part of the crew on Astra, a beautifully crafted wooden Sciomachen 38 known for its elegant Italian design.
Falling in line with the Doyle Sails ethos, by sailors, for sailors, Amanda fits this bill, her commitment to sailing naturally extended into the realm of sailmaking when she joined the Doyle Sails team in 2021. Working alongside her father at their San Diego loft, she immersed herself in the intricate details of sail design and materials. Today, Amanda’s role involves knowing each of her customer’s needs, providing personalized support, and delivering a tailored sailmaking experience synonymous with Doyle.
Her enthusiasm for sail design and customer service are central to her contributions at Doyle Sails.
Outside of her professional role, Amanda remains actively engaged in sailing. She currently crews in the sport boat class on a Viper 640 in San Diego Bay and enjoys one-design dinghy racing on Lightning and Ledo 14 boats. Among her cherished memories are the thrilling adventures of her youth in the Pacific Northwest, as well as the joy of sailing during the pandemic—a time when the sport offered both solace and boundless opportunity.
