Doyle-powered “Amadeus V” secured the Alfred E. Loomis Trophy, clinching 1st place in the St. Davids Lighthouse Division 3 at the recent Newport Bermuda Race, marking a significant achievement for owner Jay Turchetta.
Turchetta acquired the 2013 XP38 in 2015 and undertook an extensive refit, including equipping the yacht with a new set of Doyle Sails, before embarking on offshore racing. His long-standing collaboration with Doyle Sails Rhode Island’s Todd Johnston, which dates back to the 1980s, has been instrumental. Turchetta remarks, “I’ve never built a sail without Todd.”
Jay’s racing journey began with an Ericson 35, which he actively campaigned for over 20 years. After stepping away from racing in 2005, he returned in 2017 with the purchase of Amadeus V, with the ultimate goal of competing in the Newport Bermuda Race.

The crew for this year’s Newport Bermuda Race, which included Todd Johnston, navigator Greg Manning, Kevin Coughlin, and Jay’s sons Jonathan and Lukas Turchetta, was crucial to their success. Jay reflects, “Our first ocean race was the Block Island Race in 2017, where we won in class, division, and overall. We competed in our first Newport Bermuda Race in 2018 and have participated in every one since. Each race has seen improvements, and winning this year is a dream come true. I owe much of this success to Todd and my crew, who constantly strive to make the boat faster and navigate it in the right direction.”
Looking ahead, Turchetta is eager for future challenges. “Winning is the ultimate goal, but it’s the experience, adventure, challenge, and camaraderie that truly drive me. We’re already excited for 2026!”
