Doyle Sails are thrilled to announce they have been accredited with the IMOCA class rule of the “Green Sail”. In 2022 the IMOCA class introduced the Green Sail rule as part of a sequence of rules to limit and reduce the environmental impact within the class.
The class has already limited the total sails on board each yacht to 8 and put a button system in place which enables them to track sails throughout their lifetimes.
The Green Sail rule adds complexity to sailors as their manufacturer of choice must now comply with the IMOCA-approved process. Doyle Sails has recently undergone this rigorous process of testing materials, manufacturing process and transportation of the sails to ensure they are valid under this rule.
From the first discussions, the intent was to regularly update and expand on the rule. This would allow for an evolutionary rule that moves with the adjustments within the sail-making world. IMOCA and all sailmakers will therefore continue to meet to progress the rule over the medium to long term.
Doyle Sails sustainability manager Harri Wren who has led the process internally for Doyle Sails is thrilled with the outcome “Our sail not only passed the Green Sails rule, but came significantly under the threshold set by IMOCA. Our processes and procedures are working within the parameters without needing major adjustments, showcasing how well the company adheres to minimising impact already.”

Alongside this Doyle Sails New Zealand proudly attained the Toitū Enviromark Gold accreditation. This significant achievement not only validates the ongoing endeavours to minimize our environmental impact but also underscores our dedication to continuous improvement.
The Enviromark Gold audit, conducted by independent assessors, provides an unbiased evaluation of Doyle Sails’ robust environmental management system. This accomplishment not only acknowledges the efforts of Doyle Sails New Zealand but also reflects positively on the entire Doyle Sails Group, the birthplace of our flagship membrane, Stratis.
The IMOCA class will have Changs coming to the rule in 2025, and Doyle Sails will be ready for the re-audit with the expectation of the same high standard we have already set.
