Few people in the sailing industry combine hands-on sailmaking expertise, loft ownership and deep on-the-water experience quite like Mark Ploch. As part of the team at Doyle Sails New York, Mark brings nearly five decades of experience to sailors across the region, with a career that spans high-performance racing, business leadership and a lifelong connection to the cruising community.
Mark began his sailing career in 1976 with Murphy & Nye Sailmakers in Clearwater, Florida. Just two years later he purchased the loft, beginning what would become a decades-long journey as both sailmaker and business owner. Under his leadership the American operation grew into a 75-person enterprise that included a full sailmaking facility, a spar shop, a canvas shop and a retail store. After building the business into one of the region’s most comprehensive marine service operations, Mark sold the company in 2013.

His influence extended well beyond Florida. In 1989 Mark expanded into New England by acquiring a loft on City Island. After later selling that operation, he continued his connection to the region by purchasing another loft that became a Doyle Sails franchise in 1998 . He moved the loft to its current location in Mamaroneck next door to Derecktor Ship Yard, in 2024 Mark sold the loft, however remains at the helm.
Throughout these years Ploch was also involved in the design and construction of custom race boats ranging from 40 to 75 feet, further deepening his understanding of the relationship between boats, sails and performance.
On the water, Mark’s résumé is equally impressive. He has campaigned an extensive range of classes including 470s, Lightnings, Solings, J/24, Sonar, J/70 and Etchells fleets along with multiple IOR classes; 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and 1-Ton, as well as IOR 50s. The Mumm 30 and the Beneteau 36.7.
His results include winning the first two J/24 Midwinters, the J/24 North Americans, two 1-Ton North American Championships and the Sonar World Championship in 1999. Offshore, Mark has competed in 13 editions of the Bermuda Race and two races to Cuba, as well as completing eight campaigns in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference (SORC), including an overall victory in 1986 aboard Abracadabra along with two division wins.
Many seasons on the Caribbean circuit followed, where his achievements earned him the coveted Rolex Yachtsman’s Watch along the way.
While Mark’s background is deeply rooted in racing, today he is equally passionate about helping the cruising community get the most out of their time on the water. As part of Doyle Sails New York, he works closely with sailors across the region, drawing on decades of practical experience to guide owners through sail design, refits and cruising programs tailored to their boats and ambitions.
That connection to cruising is also personal; Mark now spends much of his time aboard a Nautitech 46 catamaran that he recently modified with an additional three feet of length and one foot of draft. From the U.S. East Coast to the Bahamas, including extended cruising through the Berry Islands, he continues to refine the art of modern cruising while staying closely connected to the sailors he serves.
The season ahead promises to be a busy one, with regattas, another Bermuda Race campaign and cruising plans that include both the New York Yacht Club and American Yacht Club cruises in Maine.
For Mark, sailmaking has always been about more than building sails, it is about understanding sailors, their boats and the adventures they pursue. Through his work with Doyle Sails New York, that passion continues to connect racing heritage with the evolving world of modern cruising.
