Doyle Sails New Zealand implements soft plastic recycling programme

The ocean’s health is key to the sustainability of our business, and we endeavour to continuously improve our actions to ensure our playground is there for many more years to come. We are on a journey to do our part, starting with changes around our Auckland based loft. Every surface arrives to our Stratis plant with a blue LDPE backing to protect it as it is first laid on the floor ready for the plotting and the lamination process. Up until now, this has been a non-recyclable waste product of our Stratis manufacturing process.

With the rise of programs for soft plastic recycling, we have engaged with PACT Group, a New Zealand run operation specialising in a circular economy for high-volume plastic consumption. Doyle New Zealand produces over 2000 square metres of Stratis cloth a week, creating up to 5000 square metres of this plastic backing sheet.

PACT Group work with the NZ Soft Plastic Recycling Programme to give soft plastics a new life, working with their partners to create fence posts, construction boards, cable covers, garden edging, shipping pallets.

Future Post, a key partner in the Waikato has developed a fence post that is now used across the country that is a better end product than a standard wooden fence post – and not just because it’s recycled. There is no ongoing maintenance required, stock don’t chew the posts and there is no chance of rot, splitting or cracking like there is with a traditional post. Diverting thousands of tonnes of waste plastics from our landfills every year, the fence posts themselves can be recycled time and time again. This is just one example of a true circular economy that our factory waste is contributing to.

At Doyle Sails, we have engaged in the Enviromark programme, that helps us along the journey to look both up and down our supply chain. Looking at each part of our business, we are constantly evolving, looking at what we can do to reduce waste and emissions from the start to the end of our product. We have a mission to ensure our oceans and planet are kept clean and enjoyable for generations to come.
