Meet Tomas Hornos, Doyle Sails sailmaker from Marblehead

I grew up sailing in Marblehead and spent every summer as a junior sailing at Pleon Yacht Club and with race teams in New Jersey where I had opportunities to travel nationally and internationally.

After Optis, I moved onto Lasers and Snipes where I continued learning and developing through a variety of influential coaches along the way.  My family moved to Marblehead, Massachusetts (USA) in the early 1990s from Buenos Aires, Argentina through sailing connections that my father had developed in previous trips in the 1980s.

He taught me how to sail and then race, and is the reason I am so passionate about the competition side of the sport.  One of the things I love about sailmaking is working with customers to maximize their performance and help them achieve the results they seek.  Seeing people improve their results is really rewarding.

After a busy junior sailing experience, I still continued to race.  This time it would be in the Star class, racing alongside my father as crew for 5 years, an experience I feel lucky to have had.  I learned a tremendous amount about keelboats and met tons of people who would become close family friends and eventually customers.  The early Star class experience coupled with an intense college sailing schedule in small dinghies, created a well rounded background for a future in One Design sailing.

Growing up in Marblehead also allowed me to have a close up view of some of the most important people in the North American sailmaking world.  I was quickly intrigued with these icons who also call Marblehead home, like Ted Hood, Robbie Doyle, Dave Curtis and Jud Smith.  To me it was an easy transition to the Doyle family and the industry.  Luckily both Robbie and Jud were happy to have me join the team as a youngster and I’m grateful to this day.

Being part of the One Design team has taught me about high-end quality manufacturing and superior customer service.  The industry and customer connections over the years has been a highlight of the journey and I hope to continue that for years to come.  In the meantime, creating the fastest one design sails on the planet and continuing to post top results is the focus.

DOYLE ONE DESIGN // Winning sailors know that when boats are identical, sails become the major opportunity to gain a performance advantage. Doyle Sails utilises a computational simulation environment to engineer sails that are faster out of the bag, easier to trim and maintain their designed shape through a greater wind range.
