Shokran wins Farr 1020 national championship

Joe Brownlee and his team onboard SHOKRAN have claimed the 2023 Farr 1020 National title in Auckland this weekend.

The National Championship is the pinnacle event for the class, and this year was no different with windward/leeward racing. The 7 race regatta was run by Bucklands Beach Yacht Club in fairly miserable Auckland winter conditions but the lack of sunshine wasn’t a concern for the super close racing at the top of the table.

The Doyle-powered champions started the event as they meant to finish taking early wins and holding their own against closest rival Hard Labour, who is the winner of 9 titles previously. Joe Brownlee’s team were racing with their new Doyle Sails main and Doyle Stratis #1 headsail.

The Farr 1020 class celebrating 40 years of the Bruce Farr designed yacht this season. One hundred and fifty yachts have been built and launch over the past 40 years, and the class is a Yachting New Zealand recognied national keelboat class, which means the regatta winner is crowned a National Champion. As part of the 40th-anniversary celebrations, sailors and supporters of the class were wined and dined on the Saturday evening to reminisce on the years gone by and to welcome the next generation of Farr 1020 sailors to the fleet.
