J70 Worlds, Jud Smith on Doyle Structured Luff jibs

J70 Worlds Jud Smith on Doyle Structured Luff jibs | The J70 World Championships are set for action, with racing starting on Wednesday local time in California. The world championship are hosted this year by the California Yacht Club and will be sailed on the waters of Santa Monica Bay. 62 crews will be out racing with Doyle inventories on many of these boats.

Doyle Sails One Design expert Jud Smith from the Doyle Sails One Design loft in Marblehead will be on the start line with his crew this week. Here’s what Jud has to say about the dominant new Structured Luff Jibs being used by the top J70 teams powered by Doyle.

“The J70 Structured Luff Jibs allow a down range jib to hold its structure well into heavier breeze than a standard radial panel layout would. The Structured Luff helps support the headstay when the breeze comes up in an afternoon race or the windier days. The J70 is only allowed one jib for a given event so it needs to be able to perform in all conditions. When we realized we needed to make a more powerful jib for a potentially light Worlds in Marina Del Rey, we knew we needed to come up with a panel layout that would support the headstay and reduce headstay sag if it got more up range as well. Doyle is renowned for its structured luff headsails so we applied that concept to One Design Dacron sails. It has been hugely successful in the J70, with top podium placements at North Americans, Cal Race Week, and Cal Cup since it’s inception earlier this year”

We have seen the Structured Luff jibs prove their value last week at the Pre World regatta in California, with podium places all having Structured Luff jibs, along with podium finishes at every major event this year. Teams worth watching – Surge, Black Mamba, Relative Obscurity and Midlife Crisis and Magatron.
