The ocean’s health is key to the sustainability of our business, and we endeavor to improve our actions to ensure the sea is protected continuously. Sustainability is a foundational pillar from which we outline our goals and benchmarks to achieve a more sustainable business.
Throughout 2022, Doyle Sails have developed a 2-year sustainability plan around the core pillars – planet, people, and community. As well as setting goals through to October 2024, there are some projects that Doyle’s began in 2022 and there is already plenty to celebrate.
We are looking at spots where we can improve waste and emissions in our business, across all our areas. Our sail offcuts are minimized due to our unique mapping but we are actively looking for ways to reuse and recycle offcuts, old sails, and waste from our inward and outward materials. Some of our goals in this area include investigating alternatives to shipping materials, recycling or reusing manufacturing backing, and continue to optimise the end-of-life projects with Circular luggage and Sail2Shelter.
At the community level of sustainability, we think about how sailing as a sport is at the heart of what we do. Without pathways to help bring youth and women up to the elite level of sport, the sport can’t progress. We want to ensure we are partnering with organizations and people activating goals in promoting the sport of sailing – through women’s pathways, youth performance programs, and sailors who represent the pillars of our sustainability approach.
2022 is only the beginning of Doyle Sails’ journey to a better future. With plenty of projects still in the works, there is plenty to celebrate as a business making minor changes to make a difference. You can read our full 2023 Sustainability Approach and our 2022 report HERE
The statistics only tell part of the story but each square metre of waste that is recycled, each sail that is saved from landfill, and each tree that is planted is adding up, protecting our ocean playground and our planet for the years to come.
